Historic architecture and childhood memories are part of a weekend experience in the panhandle villages.

It is late afternoon as the sun begins to settle behind the buildings on German Street in Shepherdstown, casting a surreal light against the façade of Shepherd University’s McMurran Hall, the former courthouse for Jefferson County. The most imposing structure on the main street through town, McMurran Hall takes on a golden glow that deepens the texture of its ornate Corinthian columns and clock tower. This village along the Potomac River owes much to the small liberal arts college that weaves through the town. Restaurants and shops thrive along German Street with the influx of visitors like myself as well as the family and friends of students. Once sleepy, Shepherdstown has experienced a revival in recent years, and my husband and I take an afternoon to indulge our senses at soap shops, art galleries and specialty food stores, all located in quietly preserved brick houses from the 18th and 19th centuries.

A Landmark for the Faithful…and the Hungry

While Berkeley Springs may be best known for the mineral waters purportedly used even by George Washington, visitors should be sure to take in another local landmark – Maria’s Garden Restaurant & Inn in on Independence Street. Proprietess Peg Peery, who is famous for her Italian sauce, fudge and potato soup, is also well known for her devotion to the Virgin Mary. Her restaurant is filled to brimming with portraits and statuary depicting the Holy Mother, most of it brought to her by patrons from places as far afield as Turkey, Urkraine, Portugal and South America. 888-629-2253, mariasgarden.com.  —Deborah R. Charles Town Racing

Those looking for a lively way to spend the afternoon can enjoy live thoroughbred racing at Charles Town Races. On weekends and holidays, visitors can play the slots around the clock and enjoy a prime rib and seafood buffet at the Skyline Terrace. The Inn at Charles Town, which offers close proximity to the action, will be open for business this summer.  800-795-7001, ctownraces.com  —Deborah R. Huso
