FAMILY OUTING:
LEARN TO RAFT

(As referenced from 2006 Almanac)

Rafting the Chattooga River

Why not try a wet and wild family adventure by learning to raft on the “Wild and Scenic” Chattooga River? Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) offers several learning experiences to introduce children to whitewater and teach the skills needed for safety.

The Chattooga River forms the boundary between Georgia and South Carolina but is best known as a premier whitewater river. While children only have to be 10 years old to raft Section III of the Chattooga, once they’re 13, they can participate in NOC’s Guided Ducks program where teens learn to captain their own boats. Another learning session, Whitewater Sample, teaches the entire family, including kids ages eight and up, the basics of whitewater paddling.

Nantahala Outdoor Center’s Kids’ Week offers kayak camp with sessions geared for nine- to 11-year-olds and 12-to 15-year-olds. The last day of camp is Family Day, when parents are invited to see kids show off their new skills.

A raccoon in Cades Cove, on the Tennessee side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
