FAMILY EXCURSION: GO BATTY IN WEST VIRGINIA
(As referenced from 2006 Almanac)
|
“Is it dark and scary?” “Are there bats?”
Be ready for these questions from the
kids as you prepare to travel 1,500 feet
underground at Beckley Exhibition Coal
Mine, according to director Renda Morris.
Visitors ride in authentic coal cars with veteran
miner guides and then tour a coal camp
complete with superintendent’s home, church
and school. Construction on a coal company
store is slated to begin in February 2006.
Just steps away, the Youth Museum of
Southern West Virginia features a main
gallery in four railroad boxcars and a mountain
homestead with interpreters who present
life as it was on the Appalachian frontier.
In 2000, the Youth Museum received a
national award in recognition of its community
outreach programs.
Both museums are located in Beckley’s
New River Park in southern West Virginia.
Open April 1-Nov. 1; bring a sweater for
your mine tour.
